NARS vs Maybelline - which concealer is better?

Is anyone else feeling a bit tired this week? I am. I blame it on the change in seasons. The mornings are a little gloomier, the nights are creeping in and there’s an influx of holiday pics flooding our Insta feeds, with captions like ‘Take me back. *crying emoji*'. Snore.

To perk up my peepers, I’ve been on the hunt for the best concealer to disguise that blueish-grey tinge that's taken up permanent residence in the inner corners of my eyes. It doesn’t seem to matter how many hours sleep I get. I’ve been loyal to NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer since my uni daysand I reckon it would be difficult to find someone who doesn’t love this concealer.

But if you really love it and use it as often as I do, you probably get through the little tub at lightening speed too. I buy this concealer more regularly than I buy loo roll. It costs me quite a bit each month. So, I did a little research to see if I could find something cheaper that could match up to its greatness. I came across Maybelline’s Fit Me Concealer, which is apparently a cheaper alternative that works just as well. I decided to put them both through their paces to find out…

The best radiant concealer

Blow-the-budget buy: NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard, £23.00

The formula: Radiant by name, radiant by nature. It’s a glow giver so light will bounce off your skin, blurring dark circles and imperfections. It’s quite creamy, so it won’t dry down onto your skin. Could be an issue if you’re very oily skinned, but otherwise it behaves itself once on.

The coverage: It has medium to high coverage. It’s a little slippery for spots and won’t disguise a really red whopper, but it’s great at concealing scarring or little blemishes.

The staying power: This lasts well, providing you have a light hand – less is more. If you pile it on, it will settle into fine lines and make them more pronounced. A small dab will stay in place all day.

Shade range: NARS are always excellent at catering to different skin tones. With 16 to choose from, you’re bound to find a shade to suit yours.

Bargain Buy: Maybelline Fit Me Concealer in 20, £5.99

The formula: It feels a little watery upon application, but blends very well - almost undetectable. It has a slight luminosity to it, but dries down onto the skin.

The coverage: Medium coverage, but can be built up if desired. Great at covering imperfections, but not for large amounts of redness. Works like a dream under the eyes.

The lasting power: This lasts pretty well, again providing you don’t cake it on. It does have a tendency to separate on oily areas like your nose or chin, but on less greasy places this isn’t a problem.

Shade range: There are only four in the range, which tend to lighter and medium skin tones. So if you have darker skin, you might struggle.

The verdict:

They certainly look identical given the tube and wand applicator, but there’s no denying that NARS throws this imposter out of the water. You can’t beat the longevity, luminosity and sheer effectiveness of this product. While these did look exactly the same under my eyes, I feel that the Radiant Creamy Concealer is a real multi-tasker: brilliant on dried up blemishes, highlighting and brightening the under eye area. You’re also bound to find a match with the broad shade range. Maybelline’s worked a treat under my eyes, but wasn’t glowy enough to highlight or quite strong enough to take on a spot. So ultimately it’s more cost effective to get on board with NARS. Sometimes, you just can’t rival a classic.
