The sticks that make life that little bit easier

Those in possession of a passport full of stamps – or even just an Oyster card - will know that travelling ain’t easy on the beauty lover. Not only do you spend countless hours sorting through what actually needs to be taken, but you then spend longer playing product-Tetris in your makeup bag with each round, square, rectangle or oblong compact. Eradicate the latter portion of time with a beauty stick, the easy answer to everything from quick application to perfect blending. And there’s one for everything. Here are our favourites below:

THE PRIMER: Smashbox Photo Finish Iconic Primer Stick, £22

The trick to foundation that lasts all day is to apply a primer beneath. This is silky smooth and helps keep oil levels down to prevent Shine Face. And because it’s in a stick, you literally run it over clean skin and then blend in with fingers.

THE FOUNDATION: Hourglass Vanish Seamless Foundation Stick, £42

Even as a standalone foundation, Hourglass’ perfectly formulated stick is an absolute dream. It is super creamy, so feels less of a burden to blend, and gives such excellent coverage that you can use it both as a dewy foundation and a buildable concealer. Another favourite is Nars’ Velvet Matte Foundation stick – a matte formula that looks and feels velvety, hence the name - launching on 1st September; one for your diary.

THE CONCEALER: La Mer The Concealer, £55

Don’t be put off by the price; La Mer’s concealer last’s ages and it feels substantial enough to warrant the price tag. It’s also formulated with a wealth of skincare ingredients – like their famous healing Miracle Broth – that’ll keep skin in good nick (or help it repair itself if needs be). A cheaper option? Try Bobbi Brown’s Face Touch Up Sticks, £23.

POW_ER TIP: If you’re applying to spots, dab it onto fingertips first – it’ll stop bacteria spreading from spot to stick.

THE HIGHLIGHTER: Burberry Beauty Fresh Glow Stick – Nude Radiance No.01, £25

The slightest stick of all, this one’s your secret weapon for morning-after-the-night-before skin – or just for times you want to amp up glow, and a natural-looking one at that. Because it’s small, it’s easier to be precise so inner corners of eyes (helps you look more alive) or cupid’s bow (makes lips look fuller) aren’t a problem. For something more supercharged, try Marc Jacobs Beauty’s Glow Stick – your ultimate party pal.

THE EYE COLOUR: Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour, £23

We don’t know about you, but there isn’t a bone in our bodies that doesn’t love a product name that has the word ‘caviar’ in it; it says ‘I am luxury, bow down’. These eyeshadow sticks are amazing and unlike some of their competition, they stay put all night and through thick and thin. Try Sandglow and Moonlight for the ultimate molten bronze eye.
