You know the drill. It’s 1.30pm and you’re off to get some lunch – only to catch sight of yourself in the mirror glowing like a well-polished doorknob. We cannot stand it and wish there was a way to stop that pesky midday shine. But it’s just another day in the life of your oily-prone skin. Heck, you produce enough oil to set up a company to rival Shell.

So what’s an oily skinned girl got to do to get her foundation to stay sitting comfortably all day? It’s all down to the formula. Just because you’re prone to shine doesn’t mean that you want a completely matte, chalky finish either. We’ve rounded up the best foundations for oily skin (including the best full coverage ones, the best ones for acne and the best water-based ones). Here are our favourites...

1. Nars All Day Luminous

Oh NARS, you never let us down. This water-based foundation is long lasting, lightweight and contrary to the name isn't too luminous that you'll be glowing like the moon by 2pm. The coverage is buildable, and because the formula is so pigmented, a pump and a half will cover your entire face. Plus it lasts for ages as well. Coupled with an oil-free formula and a great shade selection, you can't go wrong.

POW_ER Tip: Remember if you’re using a water-based foundation; team it with a water-based primer. Silicone primers plus water-based foundations are not a match made in heaven and can actually cause the products to separate on your face.

2. Chanel Le Teint Ultra Tenue

Once this goes on, it ain’t budging. During the testing of this foundation, Chanel made sure the their formula could survive humidity and last all day without budging. And they did a bloody good job. The coverage is very good so a thin layer will be sufficient (this one is definitely not for layering, otherwise it will cake) and you can forgo concealer. Yes - it's that good. It dries down completely, but has a very subtle luminous finish, so it won't look flat. Check out our full review on it here.

3. Clarins Skin Detox BB Cream

Ok, so it's technically a BB cream, but there's a reason why it’s included. The lightweight formula is oil free and non-comdogenic (major brownie points if you’re acne prone) and is on par with a full coverage foundation. It has a semi-matte, demi-luminous finish, lasts all day and actually works to control oil. Winner.

4. Too Faced Born This Way

Water based, infused with hydrating hyaluronic acid and coconut water?  It sounds like a holiday to Fiji, but it's actually a foundation. While all this hydration jargon might sound like a recipe for disaster, but adding these ingredients won't make your skin greasy, but restore water (not oil) to dehydrated oily skin. Take note, you can have oily skin that's not necessarily dry, but lacking moisture on a deeper level. So if you find that you're quite oily but also suffer with pesky dry patches too, this one’s for you. This creamy foundation glides into skin and has a medium coverage that can be buffed into a flawless full coverage if you wish. You can rest assure that your face will remain hydrated, not oily.

5. Revlon ColourStay For Combination/Oily Skin

We love this gentle-on-your-purse-strings bargain that's very similar to this premium foundation. Expect a lightweight coverage that can be built up to medium coverage if needed, drying down to a silky matte finish. It's oil free and a little goes a long way, so it’ll last you ages. It's easy to blend out and it won't slip and slide throughout the day. What’s more, Revlon have now added a pump to this one – praise the beauty lord.

6. Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation

The name itself is self-explanatory. It really will last you from commute to cocktails to crashing out at the end of a heavy night. Resist the urge to build this one, just the one layer is more than plenty! It dries down completely, so you have to work quickly to blend it out, but the airbrushed results are well worth the blending cardio. Urban Decay also do a great setting spray (All Nighter Setting Spray) that really does keep make-up from budging.

7. Bourjois Healthy Mix

E-v-e-r-y-one raves about this and there's a reason why. It’s not the most obvious one for oily skin, but if you’re after a dewy look that won’t spill over into oily territory, you need this pronto. It holds up well and has recently been formulated to last up to 16 hours. The texture is creamy with medium coverage that can be built up is desired. It’s also infused with a few cheeky vitamins to give your skin some love too. It won’t separate on your face, but the formula does oxidize a little, so go a shade down if you’re stuck between two. Steer away from the version with the serum in – it’s way too dewy. Stick to the original and you’ll be winning.

8. bareMinerals Original Foundation SPF 15

If the thought of a liquid foundation breaks you out in a sweat, then opt for bareminerals' powder-based formula. The original version gives you a naturally flawless and luminous finish (minus the sticky feeling usually associated with glowy foundations) and you can build it from sheer to full coverage – watch it in action here. It's totally weightless yet incredibly pigmented, so a little will go a long way. Thanks to the zinc in the formula, this foundation is really good for your skin  (it has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties), helping to keep breakouts well away and calm acne flare-ups. Prefer a matte finish? The go for the Matte Foundation SPF 15 for a velvety effect.
