5 smells perfect for summer

Humidity’s rising, barometer’s getting low… and according to all sources? Perfume is the way to go. Familiar words, yes, but never has a truer word been spoken when it comes to holiday beauty. And there’s science behind the fact that scent smells better in the sun, too. As our bodies heat up, pores open and we get sticky. Sounds grim but the silver lining is that sweat actually boosts the different notes in your perfume. Makes total sense that we wear it on the warmer parts of the body, our pulse points.

Here are our picks of the best ones to wear poolside this summer:

Maison Margiela Beach Walk, £95

Aside from the cool Polaroid-style box, which gets a big thumbs up from me, Beach Walk is like an actual beach walk: fresh, breezy, and a little bit coconutty, with a hint of sun cream. I can only imagine that all pro surfer girls (Anne-Marie Chadwick in Blue Crush included) wear it while all surfer boys fall at their feet.

Acqua di Parma Blu Mediterraneo Cedro Di Taormina, £64

Unlike many summer fragrances I’ve come across, this Acqua di Parma is a real showstopper. It's the alluring scent of mystery, thanks to the balance between light, fresh Sicilian Lemon and spicy Black Pepper to name two of the notes. A great unisex fragrance and one for those frolicking around Italy (it’s inspired by Sicily’s seaside town of Taormina) or any other bloody beautiful Mediterranean countries - and for those who wish they were, too.

Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess, £59

The ULTIMATE summer perfume. Probably no one in the universe has experienced summer without at least passing a trail of this in the street, because it’s a real cult classic. It smells of hot, sun-drenched skin, vanilla and coconut. So essentially holidays in a bottle. Summers start and finish with bronze goddess and, well, if you want to be a bronze goddess… you’ve got to wear the namesake fragrance, really, don’t you?

Atelier Cologne Clementine California, £90

It’s all in the name with this fragrance. If we’re playing word association then California basically equals The OC and, naturally, Summer Roberts and, if you want to smell like her, this is your scent. Aside from California, it also smells of Clementines; sweet, citrusy, light Clementine, which evokes summer like nothing else. Expect compliments galore.

Chanel Bleu de Chanel, £52

One to share with – or steal from - your boyfriend, this cologne is fresh and woody all at the same time. Those that like a more masculine scent (me included) will love this jasmine, mint, and citrus meets sandalwood, nutmeg and cedar scent as it settles into skin and smells like ‘fit man’, which is no bad thing, considering like attracts like, right?
