Doing Veganuary? Here are the best vegan beauty swaps

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably pledged your allegiance to veganism either for Veganuary or for the foreseeable future. We salute you! We’re fairly weak, we’re not sure we can give up our scrambled eggs and avocado on toast addiction.

But if making the vegan snack swaps wasn’t tricky enough (if someone can recommend a decent vegan cheese, do shout @thisispowder) you might be struggling with making the change to a cruelty-free make-up bag and skincare shelf as well. Luckily, there are plenty of vegan and cruelty-free beauty products that are just as good, if not better, than some cult non-vegan ones.

Checking the ingredients lists of every single product can be taxing, so we’ve rounded up the best vegan swaps for your favourite products:

The foundation

If, like us, you love NARS Sheer Glow Foundation, £33 or Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation, £9.99, then we hate to break it to you, but they’re sadly not vegan. However, Too Faced’s Born This Way Foundation, £29 is an excellent glow-giving doppelganger that comes in 24 shades, so you’re spoilt for choice. Not only is it great on all skin types, but it also pairs buildable coverage with a hydrating (yet oil-free) formula, so you can dial up the coverage from sheer to full as you please *fist-pump*. Prone to shine? Have a read on how it fares on oily skin.

The mascara

For just about any of your favourite budget mascaras like Maybelline’s The Collosal Volum’ Express Mascara, swap to Eyeko’s newest Yoga Mascara, £19. There are not many good vegan waterproof mascaras around, so Eyeko have nailed it with this one. Not only is it budge-proof for surviving your gym class, but the formula can hold a curl for way longer than you can hold your downward-dog pose too. The lotus-inspired brush has both a skinny and bushy end, so it easily defines and separates those tricky to reach lashes as well as adding some serious volume. Vegan and va va voom? We like it a lot.

The Cleanser

Vegan skincare shopping can be tricky if you’ve already found your ride-or-die cleanser. So if you’re using a cleansing balm or oil as the first step in your cleansing routine (anyone else get through tubs of Clinque’s Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm, £23, each year?) then you’ll jump for joy for The Body Shop Camomile Cleansing Butter, £10, which is vegan AND less than half the price #thrifty. Like Clinique’s Take The Day Off range, The Body Shop’s cleanser comes in both a balm and oil formula, making the swap seamless. Both remove waterproof mascara and emulsify when they come into contact with water, so every trace of make-up is washed away. Expect skin as soft as silk afterwards.

For your second cleanse, you may be in one of two camps. Gel wash kind of gal? You may already like SkinCeuticals Simply Clean Cleanser £30.45 or La Roche Posay Make-up Remover Micellar Water Gel Wash, £12.50, so an excellent vegan alternative is Aesop’s Parsely Seed Facial Cleanser, £27. It clarifies and gently exfoliates, thanks to the lactic acid, to leave skin immaculately clean – without stripping the skin. It’s just an added bonus that it makes your bathroom shelf look fancy too. If you’re team cream or lotion cleanser, say goodbye to your Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, £8.99, and hello to Yes To Coconuts Ultra Hydrating Crème Cleanser, £7.99.  It’s packed out with coconut oil to nourish and soothe the skin as it cleanses – perfect for dry or sensitive skin. The coconut smell will soon zap those January blues.

The Moisturiser

Devotees of No7 Essential Moisture Day Cream, £9.50 should try Pai’s Avocado & Jojoba Hydrating Day Cream, £32, which is basically Veganuary for your face. You’re probably well acquainted with the humble avo, but did you now that it’s also brilliant for your skin too? This Pai day cream has a lightweight yet buttery texture that quenches the skin with vitamins and omegas for optimal skin health, all without leaving a greasy film. Pai is also created for the most sensitive of skins, so you can rest assured it’ll be a good fit for the most fragile of complexions.

The Shampoo and Conditioners

Have you been loyal to Aussie for as long as you can remember? Since they’re not vegan, might we suggest Maria Nila Shampoo and Conditioner, from £12.98? The range smells just as divine and there’s plenty to choose from for your hair’s needs: Structure Repair for damaged hair; Pure Volume to lift and bulk; Luminous Colour for dye-hards; True Soft for moisturising; Sheer Silver for neutralising yellow tones in blondes and our favourite - the Head and Hair Heal shampoo £24.98 - which is incredibly gentle on hair and soothes irritated scalps. They’re sulphate and paraben free and have a colour-guard complex across the range, so you don’t have to sacrifice colour either.

The body wash

You’ll be pleased to hear that amongst the gazillions of body washes stacked in Boots, there are vegan options galore. Rather than a Dove Body Wash £2.65, go wild for the dreamy scents of Original Source Shower Gels, £1.95. Mango, Watermelon or lemon, anyone? Our favourite is the Mint and Tea Tree flavour that gives an invigorating tingle as you lather up.

The Body Scrub

There’s nothing like a good scrub with Clarins Exfoliating Body Scrub, £30. (It’s one of team Powder’s favourites.) However as it’s Veganuary, you can’t beat Bean Body Coffee Bean Body Scrub, £14.95, which comes in mandarin, vanilla bean or coconut depending on which flavour takes your fancy. The coffee bean granules are suspended in coconut oil, vitamin E and hyaluronic acid to really hydrate new skin as you buff away the old, dead skin cells – take it from us, it’s like a double shot of espresso for your skin in the morning.
