It’s a bit of a contradiction that a brand that goes by a name like The Ordinary is, quite frankly, anything but ordinary. But this is the position we find ourselves in with this week’s superstar brand. Here’s why:

What they’re about

So what is it that makes The Ordinary extraordinary? It’s rare to find a skincare brand that offers such science-led, clinical ingredients – retinol, vitamin C, AHAs, Hyaluronic Acid etc etc – at such a miniscule price. Nothing in the range is above £14.90 and, though cheap, every product is great quality. In fact, it’s not so much that the formulas are anything particularly revolutionary, it’s more that it’s revolutionary to sell products that are effective and affordable all at the same time. Add to that the line is paraben, sulphate, cruelty-free AND vegan and you’ve got a bit of a winner for all walks of life.

They’ve been around a year as part of parent brand Deciem/The Abnormal Beauty Company (who also own skincare brand Niod and supplement brand Fountain to name two) and have already made a firm mark in the beauty world – everyone who’s tried them, loves them. It’s no frills, simple, cool skincare and proof that you don’t need to spend the big bucks to get results.

What you should buy

Anything you buy is going to work; to start the roster of failsafe beauty friends, these staples are your go-tos.

Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, £5.90 – Whoever you are, whatever your skin is like, it will a million times benefit from a daily dose of Hyaluronic Acid. HA (as it’s otherwise known) holds up to 1000 times its own weight in water so it’s one of the best ingredients out there for plumping up and hydrating skin. This one also contains vitamin B5 to increase absorption so it’s a bit of a super beast. Apply after cleansing morning and night and after a month you’ll see a real difference to the healthiness of skin.

100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil, £9 – For those that have suffered with acne in the past or have uneven skin tone, pigmentation or extremely sensitive skin, rosehip oil is the answer to your prayers. It’s packed with fatty acids which hydrate, nourish and restore dry, tired or flaky skin and it also contains antioxidants to help defend the skin from pollutants and other external nasties. One to use at night, apply as your last step to lock in other serums (like your Hyaluronic) and give the skin the drink it needs.

Salicylic acid 2% Solution, £3.90 – For that one spot that just won’t leave you alone, try this. Salicylic Acid is a beta hydroxyl acid (BHA) that exfoliates away dead skin cells that clog pores, leading to spots.  It’s not going to cure persistent, hormonal acne but it will help ease those that rear their ugly heads so close to that first date or job interview.
