Facials are one of the best things to ever happen to a person aren’t they?! I think we can all agree on that. There are those deep cleansing facials that excavate every last pore from the inside out leaving skin squeaky clean, the ones where the therapist goes to town on your muscles with facial movements and strokes that work better at toning than any serum you’ve ever used and then there are the ones that send you on a transcendent journey half way between sleep and ecstasy. The new Darphin Destressing and Detoxifying Facial is the latter and it rocked my world.

What is it?

When they say de-stress, they really mean it. It can only really be described as part facial, part massage. Using the French brand’s new Vetiver range - the scent alone is said to calm and soothe – the essential oil and oil-mask are used in conjunction to take you from over-irked-and-over-worked to care-free-floating-on-air vibes. If you’re looking for a facial to help with problem skin, this aint it. This is the facial you get on a Sunday evening or when you’re at a Spa for pure and simple relaxation.

The destressing, in turn, leads to some serious detoxifying. ‘How come?’ I hear your cry. Well, stressed skin lowers the barrier function; therefore it’s more susceptible to damage and ageing. Their Vetiver Oil Mask works to nourish and strengthen the skin’s barrier, meaning that it stands a much better chance of fighting external aggressors.

What to expect?

The day I went in for the facial, I very much fell into the category of “first-degree bad mood”; it was pouring, I was drenched because I wasn’t wearing the right coat and I didn’t have an umbrella, I was carrying a gym bag (ever since I’ve found my new favourite gym class) and my laptop case. I was on the verge of snapping. Kill Bill style. They couldn’t have designed a facial I was more in need of that day.

‘Either take your bra off or lower the straps, because I am going to be doing some deep tissue stuff on your décolletage,’ explains Abigail James, International Facialist and Skincare Expert. That should have been the first indicator that this wasn’t going to be a typical face treatment. So following her instructions, I jumped onto the bed, breasts akimbo.

It starts like your typical facial, with a double cleanse, which was followed by the application of the Vetiver Oil Mask. Using the slip of this mask, James then used a special Darphin massage method on my face, neck, shoulders and, as promised, décolletage. The rhythmic motions were enough to take me from crazed, soaked bag-lady to calm in-control woman.

The results?

You’ll need to get an Uber home, as you’ll be so frigging chillaxed you’ll be ready for a snooze. But after a good night’s sleep, that’s when you’ll see the full effect - fresh, plump and glowing skin.
