Does your skin type need a serum?
Does your skin type need a serum? Image Credit:

Sometimes we wish our skin came with a manual. Just as it does with a new Audi R8 (we can dream), we wish we were told what ‘fuel’ our skin needed to hit top gear, or had a light that flashed up every time it needed a ‘service’.

Instead, most of us are left guessing which products to use, when to use them and how often. Apart from this being exhausting, and often futile, we have no idea if our skin even likes the products we’re slathering on morning and night.

You’ve heard us say it before, but serums really are the chaps for the job. They are much more concentrated than a moisturiser or cleanser so can target specific skincare problems at the root (can you hear your skin niggles trembling?). With your skin issues in mind, we’ve created our own serum manual below…

Your dark spots and acne scars are taking over… Help!

POW product: Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum

Apply: AM and PM before your moisturiser and under your sunscreen

We say: It might not sound pretty, but grapevine sap is rich in Viniferine which, put simply, stimulates blood circulation to brighten skin, is an anti-inflammatory that puts a lock and chain on melanin production (bye bye dark spots) and is also an antioxidant so it repairs the skin form sun damage.

Sound good? Watch the video on how we use it.

You’ve just entered your dirty 30s and want to keep your youthful serum for as long as possible

POW product: Caudalie Polyphenol [C15] Anti-Wrinkle Defense Serum

Apply:  AM and/or PM, after you’ve cleansed but before your moisturiser and don’t forget about your neck.

We say: Think of this as a daily companion that always has your back. It has potent antioxidants that protect against stress, environmental damage and wrinkles by ridding skin of damaging toxins and free radicals. Expect: super soft, refreshed skin.

You’ve hit your naughty 40s and things are heading south…

POW product: Caudalie Resveratrol [Lift] Firming Serum

Apply: Again, AM and/or PM, after you’ve cleansed but before your moisturiser but avoid the eye contour area.

We say: This slips over skin like a dream. With micro hyaluronic acid molecules (that is just as hydrating as regular hyaluronic acid but the smaller particles can slip through pores more easily) it fills skin to make it look plumper and creases look smoother. It also has Resveratrol, which is dubbed ‘nature’s facelift’. We actually already have natural levels of it in our skin but it decreases, usually in our late 30s, which is when skin looks thinner and sallow – so this replaces what is being lost. It’s the closest thing to a time machine we’ve found.

Ageing has hit you (age spots and all) and you need help. Like, right now.

POW product: Caudalie Premier Cru The Elixir

Apply: AM and/or PM (you see a pattern here?) and use about four drops onto the face, neck, and décolleté.

We say: Bring out the big guns! This is part serum, part oil that basically means you get the best of both worlds. The oils can penetrate deep into skin to get the actives to the heart of the cells to restore moisture and tone, and the serum has grape seed polyphenols, which acts as a shield to UV damage. Oh and it will also balance the melanin production in skin so your dark spots don’t look so – well – dark. So that’s every issue sorted then…

Your skin regularly has a flare-up tantrum and is dying for moisture

POW product: Caudalie Vinosource S.O.S Thirst Quenching Serum

Apply: AM and/or PM after cleansing and follow up with a moisturiser

We say: Despite being super lightweight, it delivers a hefty amount of hydration by pushing water deep into the skin. It absorbs fast so you don’t have to worry about it clogging pores either and skin feels so soft you won’t be able to stop stroking it.
