The best decision you'll make today!
Few things in life are more infuriating than not being able to get to sleep. First we panic, next we stress ourselves out when we notice the time and realise how soon we have to be up again, and then we’re well on our way to throwing in the towel and becoming a fully-fledged night owl. Super.
Before you get to the point where you start to consider playing whale music, we’ve got a few tips to send you off to the land of nod ASAP...
Warning: this is tough, but turn off your phone (and get an alarm clock)
We’ve all been there. You can’t sleep so you decide to scroll through Instagram until silly o’clock. Try not to – have your phone in the next room if you have to. The light from your phone and any other screens (we’re looking at you, Netflix) prevents the release of melatonin (the hormone that helps you get your zzzs). If you can bear to, switch off the gadgets an hour before bed to give yourself time to wind down – pick up that book you’ve been meaning to read instead.
Don’t get cold feet
Believe it or not, having warm feet can help you drift off to Snoozeville quicker. If the ‘socks in bed’ situation is an absolute no-no (and if you’re in a new relationship it absolutely should be), use a hot water bottle at the bottom of your bed or take a warm bath or shower just before bed to get those toes toasty.
Ah, our faithful friend… Lavender
Before you tell us it has nothing on the pills, give aromatherapy a try – go on, for us. Scented pillow spray or dotting lavender oil on your pulse points not only helps you drift off, but helps you stay asleep too (even when the bin men pay a visit at 5am). Top it off with a cup of chamomile tea and a pair of silk pajamas and just call yourself the queen of sleep!
Sleep-ercise IS a thing!
Don’t roll your eyes when we tell you that yoga will solve your problems – we’re not those girls. Promise. But there is some truth in gentle exercise before bed. Try kneeling and leaning forward into the sleeping cat pose – totally stretched out or lay with your back to the floor and legs up a wall. No need to Ommm unless you want to.
Breathe through one nostril
A bit of a wild one, we know. But this form of yogic breathing can tune your body to relax (it’s also been claimed to improve your metabolism – win-win). Try 10 deep breaths while covering a nostril. Repeat until you get your 40 winks.
Are you still awake? We can already hear you snoring…
