How often should you cut your hair

The key to healthy hair is getting regular trims, but it’s tricky knowing exactly how often you should visit the salon to get your hair cut. You might be a dab hand at it at home, but the regularity is still the same.

Whether it’s to keep your short crop in check, to make sure your layers are on point or if you’re growing it long (yes, despite what you might think), everyone needs a trim split ends to prevent any damage.

But exactly how often should we be cutting our hair? We sat down and chatted with Ricky Walters, Owner and Creative Director of Salon 64 (quite frankly one of the chicest and coolest salons in Soho), because it’s the professionals know best no?

“To put any rumours to rest, it’s true that regular haircuts will help you to grow your hair even longer,” he explains. “Plus removing split ends regularly means you’ll be able to take less and less off with every visit to the hairdressers.’

If you have short hair: Ricky suggests popping to the salon (or getting the scissors out) every four weeks and using as little heat as possible.

If you have medium to long hair: A haircut every 6-8 weeks should suffice.

If you have curly/afro hair: “Again, I’d say a haircut every eight weeks would be best.”

It’s important to note that if you regularly colour your hair or are addicted to your straighteners then you are just adding more damage and drying out those ends. Don’t worry, we all do it. But if this is you, it might be that you need more regular trips for a trim.
