The sun protection you need to know about

Ladies it’s Sun Awareness Week this week, which means we are here to tell you to up your sun protection game. We’re fully aware that this sounds a bit ridiculous considering the fact that the UK seems to have gone back into the depths of the winter – we’ve spotted fur collars and gloves this week – not cool. As we are constantly reminding you, you need to keep yourself protected, not just from sunlight, but daylight too. And so despite this seeming like a silly time to do this, we’re shouting about sun protection and all the ways that you can introduce it into your routines.

Most people find using an SPF incredible irritating – either because they panic that they won’t get a tan (FYI a tan is skin damage, whether you like it or not) or they find it difficult to add another step into their routine. But if you use products that have already got an SPF in then you’re laughing. After cleansing, toning and moisturising opt for a primer with a high SPF in (by this we mean 30+). Our faves are Giorgio Armani Maestro UV Skin Defense Primer SPF50 PA++, Skinceuticals Mineral Matte UV Defense SPF30 and Chantecaille Ultra Sun Protection SPF45 PA++ Anti-Glycation Primer.

If you’re loyal to your current primer, then you could always look at your foundation, BB cream or whichever base you prefer. There are plenty of options that we’re particularly keen on like the Sarah Chapman Skinesis Skin Insurance SPF30 and Givenchy Beauty Hydra Sparkling Nude Look BB Cream SPF30 PA++, as they offer high protection, while simultaneously giving on point coverage.

We’ve spotted more SPF face mists on the market recenetly (trend alert), like the Bioderma Hydrabio Eau de Soin Anti-UV Mist SPF30 and the new La Roche Posay Anthelios Invisible Anti-Shine Mist SPF50 and we couldn’t be more pleased. They are so handy - keep them in your handbag at all times for regular top ups whenever you want. Plus, they’re both under 100ml, so if you’re travelling anywhere exotic spritz yourself before leaving the plane for instant protection.

This is a funny one and we have to be honest, there aren’t many on the market, which is probably saying a lot, but Space NK exclusive brand, Dr Russo, has an Sun Protective Day Cleanser SPF30 in its range. It claims to have a whizzy technology in it that means when you wash off the foamy cleanser, the encapsulated SPF30 remains on your skin. Whilst this may true – we very much doubt that it provides the adequate protection you need. So therefore we are suggesting you use this, if you’re a bit of an SPF nut and want every product you use to have SPF in it. It’s good as an addition to an already excellent SPF habit, but not good enough to use alone.

So many people forget the lips. We’re so good with normal lip balm, but appalling at applying one with sun protection in. Your lips are actually more likely to burn than the rest of your face, as the skin in this area is nearly five times thinner. There are so many super options – we particularly like Fresh’s Sugar Sport Treatment Sunscreen SPF30 and Aesop’s Protective Lip Balm SPF30.

We finish this little run through by reminding you that your hair is just as susceptible to UV damage as the rest of you. Whilst you needn’t use a hair protector every day, when you’re on holiday, we recommend the Kerastase Micro-Voile Protecteur spray and Sacha Juan Hair In The Sun cream to avoid extreme frazzle.

We know there’s nothing like feeling the sun on your skin, but if you take one tip from the above then we will have done our jobs at helping in the fight against premature ageing and sun damage.

Now find a mosituriser with an SPF in it...
