How to survive winter

Beauty Resolutions in association with Darphin

Winter. Everyone is well and truly in the depths of the new year - poor, because every penny was drained at Christmas and hungry, because they’re surviving on soup and lettuce leaves. Oh and, it’s freezing cold and dark. The only positive is that we are in it together. To help you get through these dreary months, we’ve put together a handy guide to help get you through...

Wake up properly

From the moment we wake up, to the moment we go to sleep we’re on our phones. We even use them to help us wake up for work. This weekend put your phone away and invest in a new alarm clock. Lumie Bodyclock Luxe 750D, floods your room with the light and colour of a real sunrise and wakes you up with birdsong, which is said to increase energy levels, improve mood and keep productivity up. Move aside irritating phone alarm, hello soothing start to the day.

Be nice to yourself

Positive self-chat and being good to yourself goes a long way on days when you’re feeling down in the dumps. Be your own best friend. That could mean telling yourself how great you look, treating yourself to a relaxing massage (we love Lava’s Hot Shell massage at Urban Retreat), going for a blow dry or treating yourself to a bright nail polish from the new Chanel SS18 Neapolis Collection, which came out today. Once you get home, light a scented candle – we cannot get enough of Florence Verity’s Fig & Bergamot – put your feet up and put your favourite movie on. It’s all in aid of a good cause: your sanity.

Smother yourself in a mood-boosting oil

The beauty of a good oil is that as well as transforming how your skin and hair look and feel, it also has the power to improve how you feel. Take Darphin’s Chamomile Aromatic Care. Intended for the face and décolletage, it contains a blend of chamomile, sage and lavender, which help relieve symptoms of anxiety and induce relaxation and a sense of happiness. Apply away.

Get outdoors

While the temptation is to sit indoors feeling sorry for yourself, venturing into the great outdoors is an easy way to boost your mood quickly. Natural light boosts production of your happy hormones (like serotonin and endorphins). Fresh air also clears the lungs and helps you breathe, leading to a calmer mind. On your lunch break head out for a quick walk. Leave. Your. Phone. On. Your. Desk.

Do some exercise

Something else that boosts endorphins? Exercise. We know, we know. Snooze. But it honestly helps. Whether it’s a yoga class (we rate Triyoga for the best in London), spinning (Psycle give Ibiza-party vibes) or just a quick jog around the block (enlist the help of the Nike Running App to help you track your progess). Any movement will induce happiness, calm and help you get through the dreary, dark days.

Eat happy food

When the going gets tough, don’t turn to high sugar foods for a comfort eat –they’ll offer some solace for a short time, but cause our mood and general vibe to plummet not long after. Instead, look to antioxidant rich foods like berries, omega 3 packed foods like oily fish and nuts and broccoli, because it’s probably the best vegetable out there. The more vitamins and nutrients you can get from your food, the better you’ll feel. Why not take up the WelleCo Super Elixir Challenge? Take two teaspoons of their Super Elixir for 30 days. It’s said to boost energy levels, improve the quality of your hair and skin, slow down the effects of ageing and support weight loss. If that isn’t something to get excited about, we don’t know what is.

So that's it. Do all of these things and you're sure to survive the rest of the month. You're welcome. Do share pics of yourselves getting through it @thisispowder.
