How to truly age gracefully

Dr Stefanie Williams, Medical Director of Eudelo London, is back and this month she's dispelling the myths surrounding ageing and cosmetic procedures.

"‘Ageing gracefully’ in my opinion is one of the most misconstrued phrases of our time. Much talked about, but what does it actually mean?

When people refer to ‘ageing gracefully’ they typically mean getting older without getting any cosmetic procedures such as ‘botox’ and fillers. The assumption is that if you ‘cave in’ and accept the help of aesthetic procedures, you will inevitably end up looking pitifully ‘done’ – the polar opposite of naturally graceful. Aesthetic procedures are often seen as shameful and people determined to ‘age gracefully’ seem proud to remain ‘undone’.

But let’s get real and look at this in an objective light. There’s nothing graceful about adopting a defeatist stance along the lines of “it’s out of my control”, or “there’s not a lot I can do’’. For me, ageing gracefully means taking charge of how well your skin will age by utilising the latest advances and resources of modern aesthetic medicine intelligently. Ageing gracefully means feeling great about yourself and how you look.

Don’t get me wrong, I completely get it. Looking at certain celebrities in magazines, even some people in the street - and, forgive me, some of my own colleagues at aesthetic congresses - is enough to scare someone off aesthetic procedures for life. And I hate seeing ‘overdone’ people as much as anybody else - not only do they look weird, they also give cosmetic procedures a bad name. But I’m on a mission to change that!

I look at ageing gracefully as a three-area approach:

Full-face analysis

If you want a truly balanced, natural looking facial rejuvenation then you have to look at all three key areas of facial appearance and ageing. These are:

  • facial volume & contour
  • skin quality & skin health
  • lines, wrinkles & furrows

It’s not all about chasing softening lines and wrinkles; these are arguably the least important of these three areas. First you need to take care of the fundamentals; you wouldn’t start decorating your house, if it’s about to collapse, right? It’s important to put the foundation and structural support in first.

On-going regenerative treatments

Isolated corrective procedures are out; if you want to enjoy the best possible skin long term, building a strong foundation with on-going regenerative treatments is so important. You’re Skipping from one random one-off corrective treatment to another is missing an essential point, regenerative treatments such as Platelet Rich Plasma Needling (stimulates the creation of collagen and elastin), Laser Facials (laser energy that penetrates deeply, resurfacing the skin), Mesotherapy (tiny injections that infuse the skin with vitamins and minerals), CryoStimulation (application of extreme cold temperature which triggers the body’s defensive system into rebuilding damaged tissue) and Carboxy Facials (an effective treatment for dark circles and fat deposits under the eyes) you’re making an important investment in your skin’s future.

Looking after your skin

Taking care of your skin is essential and I recommend doing it by following the EUDELO staircase steps. They start at number one, from lowest to highest commitment and it’s up to you how high you want to go, but skipping a step is not allowed!

  1. A skin-friendly lifestyle
  2. Using evidence-based cosmeceutical skincare
  3. Dermatology grade facials
  4. Minimal-invasive regenerative treatments
  5. Corrective procedures

Healthy living is at the very base of the EUDELO Staircase Principle, which demonstrates that anti-ageing isn’t only about how you look on the outside, but how youthful you are on the inside, too. Modern cosmetic treatments can help you accentuate good features and hide not so good ones - truly individualised beauty. It’s not about making you look younger, but making you look more attractive. Simply the best version of yourself. Who wouldn't want that?"

You can read more about the approach in Dr Williams' new book ‘Look Great, Not Done! The Art & Science of Ageing Well – How Aesthetic Treatments Can Work For You’, £8.50.
