Welcome back to #EleanorsEdits. It’s week two of our spend or splurge test – catch up on last week's antioxidant serum dupes here if you missed it. Now, onto this week’s glow-getters.

The best liquid highlighters

You've probably seen Iconic London’s Illuminators all over your Instagram feed. If you’re not familiar with them, they are liquid dropper bottles filled with what appears to be unicorn tears – they are that glowy. Makeup artists are heralding them the kings of high sheen, however, we’ve heard that NYX’s Away We Glow highlighter is a pretty good alternative, so we decided to give them both a bash to see which one faired better.

Blow-the-budget buy: Iconic London Illuminator – Original, £29.99

This is the heavyweight of the highlighter world. It’s illuminated Jourdan Dunn’s cheek for goodness sake. The molten metal effect is mesmerizing and gives my skin a really dewy, impossibly glossy finish. I love that the dropper allows me to control exactly how much I use. (FYI, a little goes a long old way.) The good thing about this one is that I can mix it in with my moisturiser, foundation or use it as one heck of an illuminating primer. Talk about versatile. There’s more shimmer to this one, so it’s more light-reflecting. The formula is more of a fluid, so application took a little getting used to, but the payoff is ah-mazing.

Bargain buy: NYX Away We Glow Liquid Highlighter – Crystal Glare, £8

I always look to NYX for good, affordable versions of high profile beauty products and this is no different. It’s more of a champagne colour, with a slightly more yellow undertone to the Iconic London one. It’s not quite as reflective, but the finish is lovely and luminous. It has zero glitter in it – no sparkles and spangles here - so I can trust it not to turn me into the Sugar Plum Fairy. What’s more, the creamy formula is easy peasy to use with the wand applicator and can be built up if I want a more intense finish. It blends like a dream too and behaves itself when sitting on top of my foundation.

The verdict

It’s a close one, but Iconic London’s Illuminator just about snags the prize. The glossy finish is unbeatable and gives the most incredible sheen, whether you want a subtle glow on your cheekbones or a full-on strobe. It’s worth the extra pounds as a bottle is going to last you ages as the liquid is so concentrated. However, NYX’s Away We Glow is an excellent choice if you want a good budget alternative or a subtler glow. All in all, both of these highlighters are shining examples.
