Foundation gathering in thirsty patches, flaky bits of skin (ew, sorry) and tightness across your forehead. We feel your pain. It’s a complete drag constantly checking your compact mirror to see if your chin looks like a barren desert. Here’s a little tip that might just be the solution you’ve been looking for.
“It doesn’t matter what skin type you have, everyone’s skin needs the same groups of ingredients to thrive: antioxidants, skin-replenishing ingredients, and skin-restoring ingredients. The thing that each skin type has to be wary of is texture. If you have dry skin, then you should only be looking at oils, creams or balms”, says Paula Begoun, the skincare guru behind Paula’s Choice.
When skin is dry, the best things for you are emollients like jojoba oil and caprylic/capric triglyceride (sounds complex, but is actually just a derivative of coconut oil and glycerin). Find those, with the powerhouse ingredients like retinol, peptides, and ceramides and you’re on to a winning product.
Here are four products that we’ve tried and tested and have fallen in love with:
Dr Hauschka Tinted Day Cream, £28.50 – This cream envelops your skin with moisture at the same time as giving you the most beautiful hint of colour. People will stop you in the street and say ‘gosh, where did you go on holiday?’ and ‘my goodness, St Barths has treated you well’ (nod and smile to this - they don't need to know you've been nowhere but Brighton in the last week) all the while your skin stays hydrated until bedtime.
Clarins HydraQuench Intensive Serum Bi-Phase, £57 – This lightweight oil glides on, giving instant relief to skin that’s a bit parched. It’s not like a typical oil, because it’s so light it almost feels like a toner, meaning that it absorbs in record time. Hooray.
Skinceuticals Hydrating B5 Masque, £35 – This jelly like mask acts as an intense moisture boost – layer it on in the evening after cleansing and after 15 minutes massage whatever hasn’t absorbed into your skin. They say using it once a week is enough, but we reckon two or three times in front of Netflix is far nicer.
Paula’s Choice Resist Anti-Aging Cleanser, £21 - Yes it says anti-aging in it’s name, but as we all know young skin is hydrated skin and the best thing about this is that doesn’t lather, so won’t strip your skin of the moisture that you so lack.
