Red patches and uncontrollable sore-to-the-touch flare-ups. We feel your pain. It’s a complete drag getting excited about a new beauty product and keeping your fingers crossed that your skin won’t have a complete tantrum. But here’s a little tip that might just be the solution you’ve been looking for.
“It doesn’t matter what skin type you have, everyone’s skin needs the same groups of ingredients to thrive: antioxidants, skin-replenishing ingredients, and skin-restoring ingredients. The thing that each skin type has to be wary of is texture. If you have sensitive skin, choose the texture based on how oily or dry your skin is. If it’s more oily, then opt for gels and liquids; if you skin is more dry, then choose creams or balms”, explains skincare guru Paula Begoun of Paula’s Choice.
Sensitive skin is often paired with oily or dry skin, so the texture of the products that you’re using is so important. To avoid any negative reactions, look out products with soothing ingredients that also provide an antioxidant kick, and repairing ingredients to rebuild skin’s delicate barrier. Things to check the back of the packet/bottle for are: sodium hyaluronate, cholesterol, ceramides, sea whip extract, licorice root, and willow herb.
Here are four products that we’ve tried and tested and have fallen in love with:
Simple Kind To Eyes Nourishing Eye Make-Up Remover Cream, £3.49 – The original, the classic. Everyone knows that Simple is the go to for sensitive skin sufferers. This soothing eye make-up remover won’t irritate the delicate eye area, but will take off waterproof mascara. Win.
Paula’s Choice Calm Redness Relief Cleanser, £19 – Paula’s Calm range was specifically designed for sensitive skin and it’s suitable for those plagued with rosacea. The beauty of this, is that softens your skin like you wouldn’t believe, meaning you’re not left with any tightness. There’s one for both normal to dry skin and normal to oily, so no matter your concern you’ll find the one for you.
Origins Renewal Serum with Willowherb, £32 – There’s that key ingredient that Paula told us to look out for. This product was originally launched with the busy 25+ women in mind, but it’s actually an excellent serum for anyone who just wants something to care for their overstressed skin.
Eau Thermale Avene Hydrance Optimale UV Rich, £14.50 – If your skin is erring on the side of dry and patchy, then this rich moisturizer with SPF20 will work wonders to calm and soothe. Avene, another winning sensitive skin brand, includes the special thermal spring water in all their products – a magic ingredient according to them.
