The real reason your skin isn’t flawless

Why is it that striving for perfect skin takes more effort than running a marathon in ski boots (this is purely hypothetical - we have never actually attempted this, but we have walked the 50 yards from the boot room to the slopes and so feel confident the two are indeed comparable)?

We’ve gone through countless foundations, umpteen pore-refining primers and infinite concealers (our inner thesaurus got a real workout there) to smooth skin so it looks like the Instagram-filter-worthy perfection we see all over our social media feeds.

It seems, however we’ve overlooked something and forgotten a very important adage, ‘prevention is better than cure’. After several rounds of testing, we found Neutrogena’s brand new Hydro Boost range, that is made to hydrate every skin type, was the answer (especially because it stresses that good skin will always come from skincare rather than make-up).

So put down the perfecting primers ladies, because one of the main reasons your skin isn’t flawless is due to dehydration. Here’s why…

The cause

Stress, lack of sleep, staying up late watching the new series of Narcos (to name but one of our many Netflix addictions).

Any number of these factors will cause your surface skin cells to crack and open, which allows moisture to escape from the epidermis. The skin then loses its bounce, glow and elasticity, which is why it can also look uneven, flakey or creased. This then means that your make-up won’t sit smoothly. You can’t paint a pretty picture on a bad canvas, right?

The answer

Moisture moisture moisture!

Thick creamy moisturisers might feel like the obvious option, but most only hydrate the surface, as the particles are too big to slip through pores to get deeper into the skin. We’ve sifted through hundreds of products and found that the Neutrogena Hydra Boost Gel-Cream is a winner. It’s packed with hylauronic acid, which acts like a sponge under the skin’s surface and is able to hold 1000x its weight in water. It then releases water (think of a bit like a drip) every time the skin starts to get dry throughout the day. It also has added olive extract (oil) which then puts up a protective block under skin to stop the water that’s been added from evaporating out of pores (remember the science experiments at school where you added oil and water and the oil floated? This is how it works under your skin so the moisture can’t escape).

The result

Instagram filter skin that looks bright, smooth and even. Sound good?

To speed along the process, try the whole Neutrogena Hydro Boost range. The Hydro Boost Water Gel Cleanser strikes just the right balance between removing impurities and make-up yet replenishing moisture so you don’t get that horrible tight skin feeling after cleansing. Follow it up with the Hydro Boost Gel-Cream if your skin is particularly dry or the Hydro Boost Water Gel is slightly lighter if you have oilier skin.

Who needs a filter now? Not us.
