The skincare every French girl swears by

Chanel famously said, ‘Once you've dressed, and before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take at least one thing off,’ and whilst she may have been referring to fashion, the same can be applied to beauty.

For centuries the French have nailed a minimal beauty look with unfussy liner and intentionally dishevelled hair being their uniform. Whilst we’ve tried (very hard) to emulate their style, something that continually evades us is their perfectly fresh-faced skin. We don’t know about you, but if we rocked up to the office without a scrap of foundation on we’d look like we’re an extra on The Walking Dead as opposed to effortless beauty.

Luckily we have women on the ground in the city of lights to find out their secrets, and it all lies in skincare. This is the kit you need...

Micellar Water

As essential to a French girls bathroom shelf as black skinny jeans and stripes are to their wardrobe. With Bioderma Sensibio H20 being a favourite, it dissolves oils, impurities and make-up off skin, which improves the clarity and condition. So you’re more likely to bare all…

Serum

French women are aesthetically allergic to surgery – the fake, generic look of botox repulses them. Instead, they invest in active skincare to preserve their beauty and age gracefully. French Pharmacy favourite Caudalie has a serum for every skin complaint. Apply to freshly cleansed skin to allow the product to sink deep into pores (without having to dodge foundation or clogged pores) and then lock it in with a moisturiser.

Moisturiser

Supple, healthy skin won’t need a filter (or 3 layers of foundation). Embrylisse Lait Crème Concentré Nourishing Moisturiser is a make-up artist’s essential backstage at Paris Fashion Week. The chicer version of classic cold cream is the ultimate moisturiser, primer, cleanser, dishwasher (just kidding about the last one, but someone should invent that!).

Supplements

Obsessive over skin health, French girls pratically rattle they’re full of so many supplements. Omegas to keep skin supple and youthful, zinc to regulate oil and improve clarity, vitamin D to keep skin glowing and vitamin C for plumpness are just a few of their favourites.

Et voila. If may look effortless, but it takes some doing to look that chic.
