The right way to moisturise dry skin

Finding the best moisturiser for dry or dehydrated skin is tricky. Whether it's dry skin around your nose or mouth (well hello combination skin) or you suffer from dry skin alll over, finding the best skincare procucts for dry patches can totally make a difference – especially if you find your foundation flakes too (don't worry, we've also covered the best foundations for dry skin too).

It starts with a cleanser

Before you even pick up the tub of moisturiser, begin with a cleanse. The reason why is because blocked pores stop moisturiser from being able to enter the dermis. So you might be slathering it on but without a cleanse it’s up against a blocked path. Take our cleanser quiz to find out which one you should be using.

Top tip: Try to use a cream or oil based cleanser – if you’re worried about spots, use salicylic acid based products as this will lift the dirt without stripping skin of moisture. Another top tip is to rinse with luke warm water – too hot will dehydrate the skin.

Hyaluronic acid is your friend

If you’re not acquainted yet then you must have been living in a cave for the last couple of years. Welcome back! It sounds a bit severe but hyaluronic acid can hold 1000x it’s weight in water – acting a bit like a giant reservoir under your skin. As your skin gets dehydrated throughout the day it drip-feeds it with more moisture.  

Layering is the way forward

Moisturisers only hydrate the surface of the skin. Serums and oils have much smaller particles so can slip through pores to hydrate at a deeper level. Slather them on first (directly after a cleanse when pores are clean is best) and then follow up with a moisturiser. Their bigger particles act a bit like a blanket to lock the goodness of serums and oils in.

Feed your body 

It’s not just about what to add but what to avoid too. Salt is a big no no – it robs your body of hydration. Do chug water and water-rich foods like oranges, watermelon, lettuce and cucumber. Water is much more concentrated in these foods so actually hydrates the cells quicker than water can.

All in the application 

Apply to damp skin. Sounds weird, but the reason why is because damp skin can hold more product than dry – think of it like a sponge. A dry sponge initially struggles to hold onto water – it runs off but a damp one will immediately soak it up and be able to hold more water. Your skin works in exactly the same way.
