Velvet Teddy. MAC hails it as it’s most iconic shade. I have friends who’ve stuck with this lippie for longer than some of their boyfriends. It’s unsurprising really – it’s the perfect matte beige that suits everyone.
But there’s a new lipstick on the block that’s allegedly identical to MAC’s VT, and it’s only a five squid. The lipstick in question? Maybelline’s Colour Drama Lipstick in Nude Perfection. It’s had rave reviews – but is it as good as the classic? I put them both through their paces to find out if you should save or splurge your hard earned dough.
The best nude lipstick
The colour: A pinky-beige that’s as rich and soft as the fur of a childhood bear.
The texture: It’s labelled as matte, but expect a subtle sheen that won’t dry out your lips.
The lasting power: Hardwearing stuff, so topping it up isn’t a huge concern if you’ve just gobbled a Pret sandwich for lunch.
The colour: It’s so similar to Teddy that it could easily fool anyone, even a true makeup connoisseur.
The texture: It has a satin finish, but steers clear of mega-watt shine.
The lasting power: As it’s not super duper matte, I thought it might fade faster, but it proved me wrong – it was still going strong after lunch and it faded really evenly. A dream to wear.
For the colour and formula, my winner is hands down Maybelline. The colour is bang on and lasts. It’s not entirely matte as Velvet Teddy, but I quite liked the slightly creamier finish, as I think it made my lips look fuller. I urge you to pop to Boots pronto to pick one up. Yes, you don’t get the sleek MAC packaging and the satisfying click of the glossy lid, but you save yourself the other £10.41 for a Franco Manca.
