What are peptides?

This week we’re taking a look at the perks of peptides…

So, what are they?

“Saggy Sally looked like her skin was melting, so Perky Paula gave her some serum packed with peptides to tighten things up a bit.”

Peptides are a type of protein that are naturally found in your skin. They help to bind moisture (they bloody love water, FYI) to keep your skin hydrated. But that’s not all, peptides also have the ability to give lazy skin cells a good pep talk to produce collagen, repair themselves and, in general, get a wriggle on. You can say hey to younger looking skin.

Who needs them?

Peptides are your pals if you want to fight ageing (that’s most of us then). We lose collagen and moisture as we age, but these guys will have your back by drawing in moisture and producing collagen to help fight the ugly sisters of ageing: wrinkles and sagging.

Where do we find them?

To scoff: Milk, eggs, fish, grains and soybeans are all rich in peptides.

To smother: Moisturisers, night creams, serums, eye creams, face oils… Peptides are a popular bunch in anti-ageing products.

When should they go on our face?

All day, every day.

Avoid them…

If they’re in clear containers or jars – light and air exposure break down peptides and make them less effective.
