We’ve heard everyone singing the praises of vitamins C and E, but have these guys been stealing the thunder from vitamin F? Here’s the lowdown…
So, what is it?
Vitamin F is the code word for linoleic acid. Despite its name, it’s actually an omega-6 essential fatty acid and works to keep your skin soft and supple and hair strong and glossy. And get this – a study has shown that applying linoleic acid on spots can help to bring them down. We think that deserves a round of applause.
Who needs it?
Vitamin F's main job is healing the skin’s barrier. So you’re going to get on really well with this if your skin is angry, dry or sore. If you’re acne prone, your skin’s sebum could have lower levels of linoleic acid, so getting more in your skin care routine can rectify imbalances that are causing your spots to form in the first place. It’s also great for those of us who want to lighten up hyper-pigmentation after spending too much time in the sun.
Where do we find it?
To scoff: Sunflower oil, grapeseed oil, rosehip oil, almonds, walnuts, egg yolks and salmon are all good sources of linoleic acid.
To smother: Moisturisers, night creams, toners, masks, facial oils and serums.
When should it go on our face?
Depending on what formula you are using, you can use this whenever it suits your routine. A face oil with linoleic acid might feel too rich or sticky in the daytime if you’re planning on wearing make-up, but lighter formulations like moisturizer might work better as they sink in faster.
