Google ‘Royal Fern’ and expect to find a link to the Royal Horticultural Society (#gardenlife), a selection of desperately boring websites telling you the right and wrong ways to grow the plant and a few intensely green images of the ‘Osmunda Regalis’ (Latin... obviously). Keep scrolling though and you’ll come across Royal Fern Skincare. Started by German Derm Dr Timm Golueke in 2015, the brand was built on the premise (and a lot of research) that fern - that lovely, leafy, bushy ‘love’ plant that Kate Hudson gives to Matthew McConaughey in How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days - is actually pretty good for your skin.
How? Why! I hear you ask. Well, that unassuming little bush has insane beauty credentials: it’s anti-inflammatory, antioxidant-packed, antibacterial, a brilliant defender against UV light, reparative… you get the picture. It does a lot and then some. Combine all that with Dr Golueke’s supreme skincare expertise and guys, we have a hit on our hands.
What I love about these products is how they feel on skin. The cleansing balm and serum are both a gel-based, which makes them extremely light and hydrating; a complete dream for anyone with oily or dry skin.
The serum is seriously, seriously good and a personal favourite. As well as the fern extract, it contains Hyaluronic Acid to plump and hydrate, alongside a whole host of antioxidants, which defend the skin from pollution and other environmental aggravators that contribute to aging. Apply it both morning and night after you cleanse and expect it to sink in quickly to skin – yet another surefire sign of a great formulation – and consider skin well and truly fed. After a couple of weeks of using it, my skin has a noticeable glow to it.
There’s also a moisturizer and eye cream too, which are a little thicker but deliver all the hydration skin needs alongside that all-important fern. Oh and they’re totally Instagram worthy too – chic, minimal, monochrome packaging. Yes please.
